Story Behind The Song

"Hollywood" is about leaving Mississippi with nothing but a dream and following a road that leads somewhere unknown. It's about homesickness, ambition, sacrifice, and the hope that what you're chasing is worth what you've left behind.

Maurice Smith's story begins in Mississippi.

Raised among the culture that gave birth to the blues, Smith grew up surrounded by the sounds, stories, and spirit of the Delta. Those roots would eventually carry him far beyond the state line and into a career that has included Grammy-winning projects, performances alongside some of music's biggest artists, and stages across the world.

Yet despite the accolades, the journey has always remained deeply personal.

Under the banner of Maurice Smith & The Magnolia Outlaws, Smith merges the soul of Mississippi with the freedom of outlaw country and the cinematic scale of the American West. His songs draw inspiration from Highway 61, dusty juke joints, desert highways, and the dreamers who leave home searching for something greater.

His newest release, "Hollywood," is perhaps the clearest expression of that journey.

The song follows a traveler moving westward, leaving behind familiar roads and memories while chasing an uncertain future beneath California palm trees and the shadow of the Hollywood sign. Equal parts longing and determination, "Hollywood" captures the tension between where we come from and where we're trying to go.

Musically, Smith combines Delta blues grit, country storytelling, southern rock energy, and modern Americana production. The result is a sound that feels both classic and contemporary, equally at home in a Mississippi juke joint, a desert highway roadhouse, or a Hollywood soundstage.

Today, Maurice Smith continues building the Magnolia Outlaws movement while bringing his unique blend of Southern storytelling and California dream-chasing to audiences nationwide.
